We all have our own definition of what success truly looks like to us but what does success look like to you? Some people deem it to be life’s finest luxuries, expensive cars and houses. While others deem it to be a roof over their head, a healthy family and food on the table. We determine what success is based on what we value most and if those core values and needs are being met in our life. If not then we’re likely to feel like something is missing in our lives, the success we keep dreaming of.
Our definition of success will likely change as we get older and mature into adulthood as our values also do. This must mean that success is a journey and not a destination, right? If our core values and needs are forever evolving to help us develop ready for the next stage of our lives, this must mean it’s just a matter of personal growth and development to continuously keep becoming our best version of ourselves. Therefore, there is no end point of which our capabilities stop and cease to exist. It’s just a matter of how far we are willing to play the game called life and have the heart to go after what it is that we truly value and desire to achieve with out life and time.

What does success look like to you?
What Really Matters?
I believe the only way to really determine what a successful life looks and means to you is to answer these questions.
- If you had only 1 year to live, what would you want to achieve with your time left?
- What would you like your eulogy to say about you at your funeral?
- If you could only be remembered for one thing in your lifetime, what would it be?
- Now what does a successful life look like to you?
By answering the questions above, it will give you a head start from the rest to what you deem to be a successful life. Most people never even lift their head up and out of their daily existence to even comprehend what it is they were put onto planet earth to achieve with the time they have left available to them. The best thing about your own definition is that there is no right or wrong answers. It’s what you value most in your life and what to attain most.
Food For Thought
Q1. Is plain materialistic success, nice houses, car’s, holidays, and other life luxuries a bad thing to deem as successful?
A1. No one can tell you what success means to you. If you have a passion for some or all of the above and they bring you joy and fulfilment, then what’s wrong with that. I most certainly love my fast and exotic cars and have many goals to attain my favourites when my investments can pay for them outright.
Q2. What if I don’t like flashy cars and expensive things and prefer the simple things in life, is this right or wrong?
A2. You’re only making the best judgement you can based on the knowledge and information you have at the time when you decide what success means to you. Some people don’t require anything significant in their life and are highly satisfied with what they already have. You could say some prefer a minimalist lifestyle compared to those who don’t.
Q3. How do I know if my life has been successful?
A3. Simple, understand that life and success is a journey and not an end destination. Ask yourself… Am I content with what I have achieved and are my core values being met? If not then return to the previous set of questions to gain some more clarity.
